Waypoint 2a The hedgerows | Ranger Cadets guided walking trail
Now bring your eyes back from the landscape to the path you're walking along.
What do you see on both sides of this path?
Trees, bushes, flowers and grasses, right?
All these are growing in a strip along the side of the field. This is called a hedgerow. It's like a long hedge but more interesting than most hedges in people's gardens.
Garden hedges are sometimes made of just one plant, such as Laurel or Leylandii. But hedgerows are much more varied.
When I'm out in the countryside I like to use an App on my phone that tells me which plant or tree I'm looking at. It's called Flora Incognita.
So when I walked this path, I used that App to learn about the plants in this hedgerow.
Here are a few of the plants I saw: hazel, hornbeam, silverweed, bedstraw, dewberry, hawthorn, blackthorn, dogwood.
Take a look around, right here, and count the number of different plants and trees that you can see.
Can you beat me?
And if you have Flora Incognita on your phone, can you find any plants or trees that I haven't?
